The president of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, was assassinated on July 7th 2021. The Haitian police has made a statement saying "more than 20 suspects are in custody with ties of plotting an assassination on president Moise". First lady, Martine Marie Jovenel, was also wounded and has been in Miami for treatment.
The Haitian government has confirmed that 17 of the suspects in custody are Colombian mercenaries and two are Haitian Americans. According to the mercenaries in custody, they had orders to arrest and hand him over not to kill him. Authorities have also arrested a Haitian Doctor, Christian Sanon, who lives in Miami for conspiracy of orchestrating the attack.
According to the Haitian people, president Moise term was over, but Moise refused to step down which caused protests and riots across the capital.
Haiti has faced much turmoil ever since the earthquake that struck in 2010. The country has not been able to fully recover from that earthquake over a decade ago.
Currently violence and gang wars are erupting in Haiti and corruption is taking place. The country has been on shaky waters even before the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, however Moises' assassination is leading the country of Haiti to sink further into what may be a civil war. Many gangs in Haiti are more powerful than ever causing much violence in the country. The police priority in Haiti right now is to find those responsible for the assassination of Jovenel Moise. Since the police priorities are somewhere else, gangs are more prone to achieve their agendas.
